In the UK for the first time with my friends Cody and Angie. Scotland is not known as a world-class canyoning destination, but we were still quite impressed with what was on offer. The settings were often very lush and green, reminding me of being inside a fairy tale. One memorable canyon was Black Rock Gorge. It had a pretty big flow with lots of log jams, and it felt like there were several sketchy sections where a random collapse or siphon could have made things scary, but we lucked out, and it ended up being a fun, sometimes butt-clenching romp. Scotland was also great because you can wild camp in many places (we only got kicked out of one area), so we were able to camp several times in some lovely, picturesque locations. We also met briefly with a local canyoning guide, which was a good time (although we learned a couple years later that he had sadly passed away in a canyoning accident). All told, the canyoning in Scotland is very good. If you pair it with another activity, like, say, the West Highland Way, then it makes for a place with a ton of adventure potential.
