All canyoners have a somewhat morbid fascination with the story of Aaron Ralston. He is the canyoner who got his arm stuck between rocks in Little Blue John canyon out in the former outlaw refuge of Robber’s Roost, in the remote Canyonlands Maze District of eastern Utah. And because he was alone and close to death he decided to cut the lower half of his arm off which allowed him to eventually stumble his way to some help. Danny Boyle made a film about it. But aside from that titillating piece of canyoneering lore, the Roost has an awesome array of slotty and technical sandstone canyons. So my buddies Scott, Conrad, Ron and myself made the long and eventual bumpy ride out to the middle of nowhere to explore some great canyons in an area with some fascinating American history.
