My buddies Conrad, Jason, and Sam wanted to tackle the infamous Poe Canyon out in the Halls Creek area of the Waterpocket Fold. This canyon is known for having a couple gnarly keeper potholes and requiring specific ghosting techniques. I had done it before and so I came in with some knowledge on what to expect. It would be a quick trip as we were only planning to do Poe and there was some incoming bad weather. The canyon took longer than expected, at least longer than my first time through, at about 13 hours camp to camp. The notorious Pit of Despair that you have to navigate over, which requires tossing several potshots from a great distance and then ascending out, took about 2.5 hours. We eventually made it through and returned to camp utterly exhausted. The next morning we had to scram as the bad weather was coming quick like. Luckily we made it out of the the steep exit of Halls Creek before it started to just piss down rain. Our group got separated, but we all eventually made it back to the car, all soaking wet. And then unfortunately Conrad sped through a low section of road in order to get through some strong flowing water and ended up damaging something in his engine. We were able to make it to a gas station where he had to wait it out until he was able to get a tow. So, all in all things could have been a little better, but we made it out with some good memories of a beast of a canyon.
